Disneyland
A visit to Disneyland is the dream of many children, so while traveling in Los Angeles children of all ages will want to spend a day or two at the "Happiest Place on Earth". This theme park is probably the most famous in the world, not only for the actual park in Anaheim, but is also known for its lovable movie characters, top-notch animation and family values.
The park was built upon a dream by Mr. Walt Disney, who wanted to make a theme park unlike any other, where both children and parents could have fun together in one setting. He purchased a 160-acre orange grove in rural Anaheim, and construction began in July of 1954, only one year before the park was scheduled to open. Construction went as planned though, and the park opened to thousands of excited fans a year later. Ever since, Disneyland has been an enormous success, attracting millions upon millions of visitors.
The parks areas are divided into lands, each with a distinctly different theme. These lands are loaded with rides, attractions, food kiosks and photo opportunities. The first land you will come across upon entering Disneyland is Main Street, U.S.A. Here's where the Walt Disney Story is located, detailing the life of the World of Disney's creator. The Disneyland Railroad, horse drawn carriages and the Main Street Cinema are also in this area. If you are visiting Disneyland in the evening, be sure to head to Main Street to catch the parade.
Adventureland has some of the best rides in Disneyland. The Indiana Jones Adventure is one of the areas most thrilling rides, and the Jungle Cruise takes you on a boat trip through the dangers of the Amazon.
Critter Country holds Splash Mountain, which is hands down one of the best rides out there, but be prepared to get soaked! Get ready to do some hard work when riding in the Davy Crocket Explorer Canoes, where passengers race around the islands and watch the wildlife on the shore. Critter County is also home to two Winnie the Pooh attractions, which are a hit with younger children.
Fantasyland is made up of rides based on children's stories, from Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo the Elephant and Peter Pan to Pinocchio, Snow White and Mr. Toad. Also, be sure not to miss the timeless classic, It's a Small World.
Frontierland is Wild West themed, and includes the terrifying Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride, a crazy railroad thrill ride that is more like a roller coaster than a train. For a more leisurely ride, climb aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat or the Sailing Ship Columbia.
Mickey's Toon Town is one of the more recent additions to the park, where everything has a distinct 'Cartoon' look to it. This area is especially popular with the kids, as most of the rides and are a fairly tame nature.
New Orleans Square holds the famous Haunted Mansion, one of the scariest rides out there. The Pirates of the Caribbean is also here, although the ladies will be disappointed to see that it doesn't include the handsome Johnny Depp pirate from the hit movie!
Finally, there's Tomorrowland, which explores the world of the future through rides, shows and interactive attractions.
